Absa does not support plain EFT to Luno. Use Absa Pay instant deposit instead for Luno, or standard EFT for VALR.
Yes, but not through plain EFT to Luno. Luno explicitly says Absa bank transfer EFT is not available. Instead, use Absa Pay instant deposit, which is authenticated inside the Absa app. After your first successful payment, later payments can be approved with one tap. VALR works through standard EFT from Absa.
Luno's help centre says plain EFT from Absa to Luno is not available. Absa Pay works because it is an instant deposit route that authenticates directly inside the Absa app, giving Luno immediate confirmation of the payment. This is the documented route for Absa customers funding Luno.
Absa routes 3D Secure approvals through the Absa Banking App rather than SMS OTP, which is a more robust verification method. This may reduce false declines on card-funded crypto purchases compared to SMS-based 3D Secure at other banks. However, there is at least one community report of an Absa SMS saying a card transaction was blocked under exchange-control regulations.
Absa payment limits are user-set when you first register and apply to inter-account transfers, payments and stop orders. PayShap limits are R3,000 per transaction on the banking app, R3,000 on online banking, and R2,000 on cellphone banking. PayShap is too small for most meaningful crypto deposits.
There is no current official Absa document announcing a blanket crypto payment ban. However, plain EFT to Luno is not available for Absa customers. There are also anecdotal reports of card transactions being blocked under exchange-control regulations, but this should not be treated as confirmed bank policy.
The best-documented split is: Luno for Absa Pay instant deposits (not EFT), and VALR for standard EFT-style funding. VALR supports ZAR bank deposits generally and includes Absa in its proof-of-payment instructions, making it the simpler option if you want plain EFT behaviour.
